The Ten-Tec Century 21 transceiver is a great CW rig, with good sensitivity and flexibility. It has its eccentricities, but all-in-all, it's an inexpensive workhorse. One of this rig's really strong points is the PTO (Permeability-Tuned-Oscillator).

When I powered up the radio, there was an ear-splitting loud 60 cycle hum from the speaker, regardless of the volume control setting, and the regulated +12 VDC line measured +10.4 VDC. The current at which the supply shuts down is also adjustable. I believe this is all spelled out in the manual for the radio. If I remember correctly the manual is available as a free download from the Ten Tec site. I had a Century 21 but sold it several years ago.

But the frequency dial is fairly imprecise so when I asked the station to QSY up 1kHz finding him again was a bit of a challenge. This morning I pulled my TenTec Century 21 off of the shelf and made some contacts with it. The Century 21 is a 1980 vintage, CW only, solid state 5-band transceiver. It puts out something like 30 watts, depending on the band.

The May 1986 issue of 73 magazine has an article on building and installing an AGC in the Century 21. I have built the AGC and installed it. However, it is TOO good. I barely can hear the audio out of the speaker and have to use the headphones to get decent enough audio to hear. I am not an electronics wizard, just an electronics builder.
