A binary star is a star system consisting of two stars orbiting around their common barycenter. Systems of two or more stars are called multiple star systems. These systems, especially when more distant, often appear to the unaided eye as a single point of light, and are then revealed as multiple by other means.

Binary star is the most common type of multiple star system. More than four-fifth of the light that we see are part of the multiple star system. One could be brighter than the other or both can have the same brightness. Binary stars provide information about the mass of a star…

Binary stars are classified in terms of how they are observed. A visual binary is a form of binary star that can be resolved into two separate stars with a telescope. 31 Oct 2014 Sometimes planets in binary systems orbit both stars, and follow large “ circumbinary” orbits.

Astronomers have estimated that more than half of all stars in the Milky Way Galaxy are members of a double or a more complex multiple star system. Most of these are too far from Earth for the individual stars to be resolved. In a double star, or binary, system (see binary star), each star attracts the other gravitationally and orbits about a unique point, the centre of Binary Star. 11K likes · 8 talking about this.

The binary star below is a detached binary, in which the two stars are distinctly separate, although they are so close as to appear as a single star from a distance, and so constitute a close binary system. Click on the image to enlarge.

(DIS: " Context Is for Kings ", " Choose Your Pain ") Astronomers have painted their best picture yet of an RV Tauri variable, a rare type of stellar binary where two stars – one approaching the end of its life – orbit within a sprawling disk of dust. Their 130-year dataset spans the widest range of light yet collected for one of these systems, from radio to X-rays.

The brighter star is officially classified as the primary star, while the dimmer of the two is the secondary (classified as A and B Binary star, pair of stars in orbit around their common centre of gravity. A high proportion, perhaps one-half, of all stars in the Milky Way Galaxy are binaries or members of more complex multiple systems. Most stars are members of multiple-star systems. Some stars are members of close binary systems where material from one star swirls around the other in an accretion disk.

The origin of binary stars has long been one of the central problems of astronomy. One of the main questions is how stellar mass affects the tendency to be multiple. There have been numerous studies of young stars in molecular clouds to look for variations in binary frequency with stellar mass, but so many other effects can influence the result

Some binaries form a class of variable stars, the eclipsing variables. Eclipsing binary stars are those whose orbits form a horizontal line from the point of observation; essentially, what the viewer sees is a double eclipse along a single plane; Algol for example.
